Spirit Tour 2015: The Culper Spy Ring: From Secrecy to Victory

TVHS Spirit Tour 2015 Group Shot

This year’s Three Village Historical Society Spirit Tour on Saturday, October 17th was an overwhelming success. The ability of the actors to create an authentic 1770’s atmosphere was astonishing. Interaction between the actors and guests made it an exceptionally interesting and fun tour for both adults and children– it gave a glimpse into the lives and cultures of the people living in the area at the time, and guests were encouraged to solve a coded message in their programs using information from members of General George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring along the way.

As the costumer for this event each year, it is very rewarding to work with the tour’s volunteer actors, docents, and coordinators to help bring these stories to life with our historical garments and artifacts. This annual tour is a real community effort: The Three Village Historical Society works in cooperation with both the Setauket Presbyterian Church and Caroline church, and local businesses donate food for the occasion.

We look forward with anticipation to see what they will come up with for next year!

Upcoming: 21st Annual Three Village Historical Society Spirit Tour

TVHS Spirit TourThree Village Historical Society will be performing their 21st Annual Spirit Tour, “The Culper Spy Ring: From Secrecy to Victory” next week, Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

This year’s tour is a continuation of last year’s popular Culper Spy Ring theme, this time with a retrospective view that reflects on the challenges and successes attributed to George Washington’s spies.

For the past several weeks, we have been busily preparing the costumes and props for this annual event featuring community volunteers and historians. It’s a wonderfully immersive experience educating about some of the fascinating real-life events of our community’s history. The story of the Culper Spy Ring has been receiving a lot of attention due to the popular AMC series, Turn. There is currently much local excitement about the discovery of a document shedding more light on the Spy Ring and other individuals from Port Jefferson and Mount Sinai who were involved in its activities.

Smithtown Sesquarcentennial Parade

Long Island Woman Suffrage Association
The Smithtown 350 Foundation‘s Sesquarcentennial Parade on Saturday, September 26, 2015 was a great success! We costumed a number of people marching in the parade, including Richard Bull Smith as his famous ancestor, Richard “Bull” Smythe, a group of colonial children representing St. James United Methodist Church, an 1883 sea captain for our own Port Jeff Ferry, and we were delighted to learn that the Long Island Woman Suffrage Association won an award for Most Historic Costumes!

Immigration-themed Photo Shoot

Ellis IslandThese photos were professionally done in 2009 for an educational book series called “Time Traveling Tracy”, about a girl who visits various time periods and learns how people lived at those times. The photos were staged at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and Ellis Island in New York City.

We provided all costumes and props shown, helping to reflect the varied cultures and melting pot environment that resulted from families and individuals that made long journeys in search of the American Dream. We have many more items than what is shown!

These items are perfect for school projects and themed events that honor our ancestors.
